Haors of Sylhet

The Sylhet valley has a good number of haors which are extended marsh ecological system. During winter these haors are cosmic green land, but in the rainy season they turn into a turbulent ocean.

These haors provide a asylum to the millions of migratory birds who fly from across the Himalayas to escape the severe Siberian winters and other cold regions .Hakaluki Haor and  Tanguar haor has come into international focus. Hakaluki haor is the largest of Bangladesh and one of Asia’s larger wetland resources .It falls under Barlekha, Kulaura, and Juri of Maulvibazar district and Fenchuganj, Golapganj of Sylhet district .Having a wide variety of its flora and fauna, it performs a special role maintain ecological and genetic diversity.

Tanguar haor located in the Dharmapasha and Tahirpur  upazilas of Sunamganj district .Hijal, karach, gulli, balua, bantulsi, nalkhagra and other freshwater wetland trees are in this haor. When the wave of water feels on the shore of haor it can be compare with the wave of sea. Haor plays an important role in fish production as it functions as a 'mother fishery' for the country. Both haors are declared as an Ecologically Critical Area considering its critical condition as a result of overexploitation of its natural resources. I could not forget that scenery when I along with my few friends were visiting Tanguar haor and observed the full moon from the roof of boat at midnight. It looked like we were imbibing soothing splendor of a divine place.
